Joachim Low provides Timo Werner fitness update ahead of Germany’s clash with Switzerland

Germany boss Joachim Low has confirmed Timo Werner has returned to ‘full strength’ ahead of the side’s Nations League clash with Switzerland.

Werner started three games on the bounce for Chelsea leading up to the international break but has been suffering with flu-like symptoms which meant he missed Germany’s 3-3 draw with Turkey last Wednesday.

Though Werner’s test for coronavirus came back negative, he started on the bench as Germany beat Ukraine at the weekend.

However, the Chelsea striker came on for Julian Draxler with ten minutes remaining in Kiev and could be in line to start versus Switzerland at Cologne’s RheinEnergieSTADION this evening.

Julian Draxler, Marcel Halstenberg and Lukas Klostermann are all struggling with minor injury problems and are doubts for the match.

‘Timo Werner is back to full strength and there are no weaknesses,’ Low told the media on Monday.

‘He is available.

‘But we have small question marks. [Julian] Draxler has Achilles problems, [Marcel] Halstenberg is dealing with adductors and [Lukas] Klostermann has knee problems.’

Low has been on the receiving end of widespread criticism across Germany’s Nations League campaign, with many – including Lothar Matthaus – questioning his decision to opt for a three-man defence.

‘The experts have to express their opinions and that is completely fine and certainly not lacking respect.

‘What is important is that we criticise ourselves internally and we do that.’

Low added: ‘I expect concentration, more precision, courage and the right attacking accents.

‘It will be a completely different game than against Ukraine.

‘The Swiss can defend extremely well.’

Frank Lampard will no doubt be keeping a close eye on Werner’s fitness levels as he prepares for Chelsea’s next match at home to Southampton in the Premier League.

The Blues then kick off their Champions League campaign at home to Sevilla next Tuesday.
