at Old Trafford.

And Solskjaer, whose only previous managerial experience before United came at Cardiff City and Molde in Norway, opened up on the support he receives. He also name-checked United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward as someone who helps him.

“I’ve had some fantastic support from Sir Alex in the hard times we’ve had here,” he told the High Performance podcast.

“When you lose a game for Man United, it is a crisis, and he’s been here in the difficult times, he gives me very good support. Ed and the club have been very supportive as well.

“I had Rene Meleunsteen as a coach when I was in the first team at 30. And I still learned things off him that I took into my coaching career, but also to the last few years of my playing career.”

Solskjaer also revealed how he expressed his desire to make seismic changes at United when interviewing for the full-time manager’s role.

He was initially handed the job on an interim basis after Jose Mourinho’s sacking but convinced the board to hand him the the reins on a permanent basis.

He added: “I put my ideas across and said ‘this is not an easy fix’ because I thought quite a lot needed to be done. ‘If you want to give me the job, this is how I want to do it, but you understand that it might take some time, it will mean we’re not going to challenge for the Premier League in 2020’.

“There’s always demands, you need to perform and you need to win. Winning at Man United is important.

“There was no chance of resting on our laurels and saying ‘tenth is fine because we have a three-year plan’, you can’t do that. You have to always push your limits.

“It’s important to have open and honest conversations with people. I’ve become so much more relaxed and you have to be yourself.”
